October
Another month in New
Orleans has passed, and I’ve come to love my time at Tulane and in Mid-City. As
fall approaches, the weather has cooled down and I’ve gotten more opportunities
to explore the city and its different neighborhoods. While the Infectious
Diseases unit proved challenging due to the plethora of drugs we had to learn,
I enjoyed being able to identify antibiotics I have previously been prescribed
and learning more about them. After the ANS and Physiology unit, I learned that
I will be needing a more in-depth understanding of anatomy and physiology in
the future.
This month, I had the
opportunity to volunteer at Backyard Barbecue fundraiser for the Crescent City Farmer’s
Market at Central City BBQ. I spent most of my Sunday morning helping set-up
tents, tables, and general organization for the event. As volunteers were
invited to attend the actual event that afternoon, I decided to step out of my
comfort zone and check it out on my own. While I got to try different foods
from the New Orleans restaurant scene, I ended up bumping into two women who
had volunteered with me during set-up that morning. To my surprise, we ended up
talking until the end of the event, and I learned about their experiences
living all over the southern United States, travels to Kashmir, and their opinions
on locally sourced food in New Orleans. They even invited me to their friend’s
95th birthday party the following weekend! Overcoming my previous anxiety of
attending an event alone ended up being an amazing experience, as I met people
I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to interact with.
Lastly, I have continued
volunteering at KIPP Learning Academy weekly with two classmates, and have had
more opportunities to help out with organization around the building. Recently,
we have helped distribute school supplies to classrooms, and put up
bulletin boards. I look forward to more volunteer experiences in the second
half of this semester, and strive to continue working hard in the classroom as
well!
